When Steve started teaching in 1997, I decided to be a supportive wife and go to his class, I had tried Tai Chi before in 1992 but hadn’t really enjoyed myself, so this was a really big test for me. Learning from Steve was a pleasure, and I soon found myself more involved in the lessons, working hard, losing weight, gaining flexibility and getting fit for the first time in years.
With such an inspirational teacher, Tai Chi soon became a lifestyle, and we spend our holidays at training camps. Our first was in 1998, at St Mary’s Bay in Kent. Steve wanted to improve his teaching skills, so I went along, still a beginner, to support him and ended the week with a teaching certificate myself.
I still felt I had a long way to go before I was confident and competent enough to teach, but I ran a training course in Gravesend, and several demonstrations, which were well received. 2000 was a busy year, as I started my present class in Gillingham, and became the Licencing Officer for Dan’s Practical Tai Chi Chuan International organisation.
I have taken part in the British Open and have won two silver and two gold medals in Ladies Expert Hand Form. I am now a judge for the various form categories, and also assist by weighing in the competitors.
I was asked to start a class by several local ladies. My class has now been running for seven years, and my students have given me a lot of joy, as I have found I can keep them entertained and fit at the same time. For the last five years the class numbers have grown to include both men and ladies, all at various levels, so Steve is assisting me and we now have the opportunity to teach a more martial curriculum.
Recently Simon has joined us, and the team is now complete.
